Six questions before you sign with anyone
Whoever you go with. Including us.
- Is the price published? If not, ask for the total over the whole term, fees included.
- Is there a minimum term? And does it renew on its own?
- How do I cancel? Online, by email, or only by phone?
- Who controls the domain? If it’s them, ask how you’d move it.
- Do I keep the site if I leave? The design, not just your text and photos.
- What do edits cost? Unlimited, a time allowance, or an hourly rate?

Questions
Do website companies for small businesses require contracts?
Many do. Hibu One has a six-month minimum, Townsquare Interactive, Thryv and UENI set a term in your order, and LinkNow Media describes prepaid terms. Happy Websites has no contract, so you can cancel anytime.
Who should own my website’s domain name?
You should. When a website company registers the domain in its own name, you may need its help, or pay a fee, to move it. Happy Websites hands the domain over if you leave.
What happens to my website if I cancel?
It depends on the company. Townsquare Interactive and Thryv keep the design, UENI takes the site offline, and at Hibu your access ends. With Happy Websites, you keep the site, its files and its content.
Which of these is cheapest?
UENI has the lowest published price, from $24.99 a month plus a $79 setup fee. Happy Websites is $99 or $199 a month with no setup fee, no contract and unlimited edits on both plans.
